What is Cruelty to Animals?
The term “Cruelty to animals” refers to treatment or standards of care that cause unwarranted or unnecessary suffering or harm to animals. Standards of both animal cruelty legislation, and enforcement, may vary between different places from non-existent through to comprehensive, and the acts and conditions which are deemed "cruel" also vary.

Different people have different views on such cruelty of animals. For example, some people think that fur farming is cruel to animals but entrepreneurs like farmers think it is not as it is benefiting to the economy

Such acts are cruel and should be stopped. These acts kills animals and harms animals that are innocent. Just like sharks that are hunted for their fins that are believed to have “powers” to actually cure illnesses.
Such acts are known as zoo sadism which is from the word zoo + sadism.
People exploit animals for profit or perverse pleasure in different ways.

It is any person who...
- cruelly beats, kicks, ill-treats, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures, infuriates or terrifies any animal;

- causes or procures or, being the owner, permits any animal to be so used;

- being in charge of any animal in confinement or in the course of transport from one place to another, neglects to supply the animal with sufficient food and water;

- unreasonably doing or omitting to do any act, causes any unnecessary pain or suffering or, being the owner, permits any unnecessary pain or suffering to any animal;

- causes, procures or, being the owner, permits to be confined, conveyed, lifted or carried any animal in such a manner or position as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering;

- being the owner of any animal, abandons the animal without reasonable cause or excuse, whether permanently or not, in circumstances likely to cause the animal any unnecessary suffering or distress, or causes or permits the animal to be so abandoned;

- employs or causes or procures or, being the owner, permits to be employed in any work of labour, any animal which in consequence of any disease, infirmity, wound or sore, or otherwise is unfit to be so employed; or

- causes, procures or assists at the fighting or baiting of any animal, or keeps, uses, manages, or acts or assists in the management of any premises or place for the purpose, or partly for the purpose, of fighting or baiting any animal, or permits any premises or place to be so kept, managed or used, or receives or causes or procures any person to receive money for the admission of any person to the premises or place,

How to stop it?
How are countries worldwide trying to stop animal abuse?
Many organizations worldwide, such as SPCA have been set up to try to educate the Public about the importance of caring for animals and responsible pet ownership. These organizations aim to instill a sense of righteousness in the nations, and teach them to love and care for animals.

Organizations set up many campaigns to raise awareness on caring for animals, and also to emphasize on the fact that “animals have feelings too”. Many people disregard this fact, and abuse animals, thinking that they are just toys.

These organizations also encourage young people to speak out and do the right thing about animal abuse. Of course, they also discourage people from buying poached animal parts, so as to help to put an end to illegal wildlife trade.

One such campaign is the “Wild but not Free” campaign, which aims to encourage Singaporeans to help put an end to the illegal pet trade in Singapore. Their motto is “Wipe out the trade in wildlife, before it wipes out our wildlife”. This campaign is actively promoting wildlife conservation and educating the public about animal welfare.

Animal welfare is the viewpoint that animals, especially those under human care, should not suffer unnecessarily, including where the animals are used for food, work, companionship, or research.

This position usually focuses on the morality of human action (or inaction), as opposed to making deeper political or philosophical claims about the status of animals, as is the case for an animal rights viewpoint. For this reason animal welfare organizations may use the word humane in their title or position statements.

It is believed worldwide that the animals should have the “Five Freedoms”.

Freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition
Freedom from discomfort due to environment
Freedom from pain, injury and disease
Freedom to express normal behavior for the species
Freedom from fear and distress

There are also laws in some countries to stop animal abuse. Many jurisdictions around the world have enacted statutes which forbid cruelty to some animals.

These statutes provide minimal requirements for care and treatment of animals, but do not require optimal treatment or mandate kindness or love. They require that animals be provided shelter, food, water.

The SPCA Organisation
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is one of a number of animal welfare organisations whose operations include protecting and providing shelter to animals in danger. It is a worldwide organisation. The SPCAs are organisations that campaign for animal welfare and take in abused or abandoned animals, and help them to get adopted.

The SPCA receives over 1,000 unwanted and abandoned animals every month. Less than 10 per cent of them are able to be put up for adoption due to there being too few homes available. If you are considering giving up your pet or a stray to the SPCA, please try every other avenue first to find the animal a home, only giving it to the SPCA as a last resort.

The SPCA requires over $1.4 million annually to operate. This comes primarily by way of donations from members of public and from fund-raising activities.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is the first registered animal welfare charity in Singapore. The two main objectives of the SPCA are:
* to promote kindness to animals and birds
* to prevent cruelty to animals and birds

The Society carries out the following services:
* A 24 hour Ambulance service for sick, injured and very young animals which are rescued and brought to the SPCA consultant veterinarian
* Investigating cruelty complaints
* Collection of unwanted pets
* Educational programme for schools
* A clinic for SPCA's in-house animals, plus the sterilisation and general treatment of stray animals
* Operating a adoption shelter and a supporting quarantine service
* Humane euthanasia of animals
* Lost and Found Pets
* Re-homing of unwanted animals

Why do they do that
We'd describe it as an issue of power. Humans like power. Money brings power.
Seals get skinned alive because they do not have time to kill them properly first, and cows get their legs cut off while they are hung upside down. All these? Just to save a little money.

We've seen them held in crates all day standing in their own waste until it is time to have a new owner. We've seen them being starved. Animals do have feelings. They can be loving and grateful even after being abused.

When people are caught abusing animals, the punishment should be a lot harsher than it is. If a child can bash and drown a kitten, what do you think he or she will do to people in the future? This is a psychological problem that is not addressed.

Some people buy pets for pleasure without thinking of the responsibility they are about to take up.

To raise a pet, lots of time and money is needed. When he is sick, you bring him to the doctor; when the pet is hungry, you feed him.

It may seem entertaining
at first, however as time passes, one may feel that it is troublesome and a complete waste of animals.

What do they do? They abandon them without showing any sympathy.
